The “lost” KLPI sessions
Back in the day, I worked at the small (officially 4kw) college radio station, KLPI. While most of its former members went on to careers in engineering and business, working at KLPI helped springboard me into the KNOE radio stations. When I left KLPI, I took all of my show content with me. I have already archived a lot of my work from those years in the “fish bowl” on this site. All you have to do is click on Audio and Interviews to hear such classics as the Nickelback, Alien Ant Farm, and Flaming Idiots interviews. These interviews were saved onto a computer or burned onto cd, making them very easy to archive. The rest of the content has been sitting in MiniDisc form and hasn’t been accessed since my last day at that radio station. Since the MiniDisc format never really caught on, I had no way of getting this content off of their discs. Recently I bought a MiniDisc player on eBay and was able to extract some of this “Lost Content.”
So far I’ve edited down all of the callers that I recorded and set it to music. You’ll hear a lot of the old DJs calling in during this 15 minute caller montage including Brody calling for Mark, Aaron’s girlfriend calling for him, and Margaret asking if some event was canceled. Never has it been more apparent to me that the campus radio station has no idea about campus events as when I told a caller that I had no clue where students could purchase tickets to an upcoming football game. The radio station’s current location is right behind the ballroom where a lot of concerts used to take place. After one concert I was hanging out in the production room when the Canadian rock band Dust For Life happened to walk by. I ushered them into the room, shut the door, and got them to record a plug for my radio show at the time. Look for that under Shoutouts and I plan to add other shouts from Alien Ant Farm and Chris D. from Saliva. I’ve added a KLPI category under audio that contains a lot of miscellaneous clips like promos for my radio show and a station ID from the band Weezer. If a KLPI era aircheck is what you’re seeking, give The EDGE Live a listen under airchecks. This was recorded sometime in 2000 when I decided to take my weekend show on the road (actually about 100 feet outside of the radio station into Centennial Plaza). In this rare aircheck you’ll hear Johnny (aka Mr. Excitement) and myself play music and attempt to get people to come and hang out with us. I don’t think we ever gave away those 3 Doors Down tickets. We had better luck a few months later when we pulled the same stunt for an on campus 3 Doors Down show. Enjoy these classic clips and keep checking the audio section to see what else I harvest from these MiniDiscs.
