Know when to fold ‘em

Before moving to Atlanta, the entertainment scene seemed pretty interesting.  For the last 12 years, a 3-day Voodoo-like music festival has taken place at Piedmont Park in Midtown.  I attended this festival, dubbed Music Midtown, last year and, despite all of the rain, enjoyed the variety of artists that performed.  On one stage you had The Black Eyed Peas while on other stages you had The White Stripes, Alan Jackson, and Tom Petty.  It seemed like the old met the new and one genre met the other at Music Midtown.  Well citing 3 years of inclement weather and poor ticket sales, promoter Peter Conlin has decided to pull the plug on this 12 year tradition.  It’s a shame to see this thing go because I felt this thing was very well run.  There were people as far as the eye could see on the first and third days of the festival.  It seems odd to cancel the show without trying to find another venue.  Another thing that’s been brought up is that the city of Atlanta is making things increasingly difficult for event promoters by making the permit process more and more difficult each year.  99x normally puts on a late summer concert series dubbed “Downtown Rocks” and according to their event manager, that may also bite the dust.  I didn’t get to attend that series last year but they had record crowds turn out to see bands like Weezer, Garbage, and Cake.  These concerts seemed great because they were free and centrally located at Underground Atlanta.  Hopefully now that there’s an opening for summer music entertainment, a bigger, stronger promoter will move in and take over.  I liked how Music Midtown catered to everyone so hopefully we could get someone like Rehage (Voodoo) or Goldenvoice (Coachella).
