I’m Pooped

[Listening to: Aerosmith - Dream On]

Phew....who would have known that my first day of school could wear me out so badly.  Here’s what went down.  I went to Business Communication and Database today.  In Database, the professor tells me that the Finance department is trying to hunt me down.  Turns out they’ve canceled my finance class.  I went back home and sat down and weighed my options.  I really didn’t want to take Finance at 8am but I needed to see if that would push my graduation date back any if I just droped it till next semester.  Turns out I shouldn’t be taking Database right now.  I should take Cobol because it’s only offered once a year.  So I dropped Finance and switched from Database to Cobol.  I’ll take Advanced Cobol and Finance next semester and postpone Database till next fall.  I’ll definately graduate next fall for sure.  I’ve also lightened my load from 15 hours each semester down to 12.  It will be less stressful and that’s always a good thing.

My mom is talking about taking a vacation next summer so I may only go one summer session.  She is throwing around Ireland.  That would be hella cool...I’ll have to charge the digicam up!  Dad’s addicted to the Kerpal “You kicked my dog” mp3.  Somebody sent it to him at work and he’s quoting it.  It’s scary.  Oh and 3 more days until LaTech gets stomped on by Miami.  I’ll be at the game with the digicam!

Back to school

[Listening to: Alien Ant Farm - These Days]

This is it...the last day of freedom rapidly speeding away from me like a runaway train.  Tomorrow I start the first day of my final year at ULM.  I only have two classes tomorrow and oddly enough, both classes are in the same room.  Tomorrow’s schedule is Business Communication followed by Database (w00t w00t SQL in da house!).  I’m ready to be the ubergeek on campus this semester.  Check out the shirts I got from Thinkgeek, here and here.  Tuesday’s schedule is the hectic one.  I have Small Group Communication followed by Marketing and then Finance.  I was able to make some adjustments at the last minute so I no longer have a night class!

I watched Mallrats again today.  I watched Clerks on Friday so it was only fitting that I popped in another Kevin Smith flick after work today.  Why am I watching Kevin Smith films?  Click here to find out.  These came in the other week while the site was in transition.  I’ve just got around to watching them.  Cool huh?

I still cannot check my email through Outlook...grr...I don’t think I’ll be able to until the domain is fully under the new host’s control.  I’m having to use their crappy webmail browswer to check my mail.  It’s not too handy when there are 164 emails in my inbox.  If you’ve emailed me and I haven’t responded, this is why.  I am having a hard time sifting through all the spam without my normal filters in place to block the crap.

Other than that, I’ll be co-hosting and running the board for Ray Davidson starting this Thursday on AM 540 at 8am so tune in if you’re in the Monroe area.  I really want to check out Sassagoula Falls Saturday.  I may head out there or I may not.  It all depends on the response of someone when I work up the courage to ask her to check it out with me.

When the Saints don’t come marching in

[Listening to: Godsmack - Whatever]

It’s time now for the first “work bitch” post.  Today was Game 3 of the Saints preseason.  Around 6pm I get a call from the board op telling me that there is nothing coming down the network feed that should be putting out the Saints pregame show.  I ran down to the station and verified that there was no signal.  I called my boss who told me that the kickoff was delayed for an hour (which is wasn’t).  I called the engineer and he told me to go up and reboot the satellite receiver.  This required me to venture into unknown territory....I had to walk upstairs!  This is the first time that I had ever been upstairs by myself.  KNOE is setup so that everything technical goes on upstairs with all the studios and offices being downstairs.  The upstairs floor is basically a labryinth of hallways that all lead you back to where you started.  It took me a while but I finally found my way back to where all the magic happens.  I was very impressed with the wall-o-equipment.  I rebooted the receiver which did no good.  We put the game through on the telephone until I was able to get ahold of someone down the network to fix the problem.  If I got one thing out of today’s experience it was the ability to navigate around upstairs without getting lost.

Since I’m on a work theme, I’ll go ahead and post the FM 102 news which by now isn’t really news anymore.  FM 102 is changing.  We’re trying to become more of a traditional CHR station.  This means including more R&B and hip hop songs.  We now play Nelly, “Fiddy Cent”, and the Black Eyed Peas to name a few.  This all started effective Friday.  Also, we have streamlined our playlist from 500 songs down to about 150.  Nothing in our playlist is more than 3 years old.  The clock has also been adjusted so that we are doing something after every song now.  Apparently this is how you gain and retain listeners.  Who knew?

Today’s word is propagation

[Listening to: Audioslave - Show Me How to Live]

As you can see, the nameserver switch has fully propagated through the internet.  There may be a little more downtime next week as I switch the site from eNom to another registrar.  Enom wouldn’t let my domain go unless I emailed them with my username and password.  That struck me as a little odd since I’m from the school of “never give sensitive information out through email.”

Neil Shaw (TV8 weatherman) is my new best friend.  On Wednesday he walks in to the studios and hands me this!  He went to California last week to attend a meeting on the MDA telethon that’s coming up.  He told me that every year Casey Kasem is there and the two of them talk.  Well I sent him with a rundown sheet for Casey’s Top40 countdown.  According to Neil, Casey was curious as to what I did for KNOE and whatnot and gladly autographed the countdown sheet and CD.

Also, I found this awesome video about a month ago.  I held off posting it to my blog because I wanted to talk about it when the new site was finished.  The 17 minute video is made by TechTV’s Kevin Rose and Dan Huard.  It’s called The Broken.  Kevin promises more episodes when he has the time.  This is something that I would do if I had access to this kind of equipment through my job.  In this episode, Kevin and Dan explore hacking into wireless networks and social engineering.  This is a MUST SEE.  Check it out HERE

School starts Monday....I’ll also be out at the LaTech vs Miami game on Thursday in Shreveport.  My dad’s coming up because he’s a Miami alumni and this is one of the rare occasions when Miami plays in Louisiana.  Other than that, I’ve got some FM 102 news but I’ll save that for a later post.

So Big

Just when you thought it was safe to turn your computers on again, there’s a new virus in town.  This time it’s called SoBig.F.  I received it twice in my inbox so far.  The university is kind enough to scan all incoming email for viruses so I didn’t actually get the bug.  It appears that someone on campus DID get it because EVERYTHING is down from the mailserver to the webserver to the online registration site.  It’s going to be fun tomorrow when students show up to the dorms with no school network.

In other news, I finally got my admin contact switched on the domain.  By the end of the week you should see this post!  woohoo!  School starts Monday and I’m not looking forward to it.  Yesterday I bought my books and picked up my parking sticker.  I only have 4 more days of fun left until it’s back to the books.  There’s a party tomorrow night that I’ll end up going to.  Amanda bought Chicago yesterday so we’ll probably watch that this week.  Then there’s Sassagoula Falls.  I have been dying to check this place out since it opened last week.  Amanda wants to go too so hopefully we’ll get out there before classes begin.  That’s it for now.  I’ll post again as soon as I see that my site is up and running!
